The material from my panel is now available as an article in Comic Frontier's zine . If you can read Indonesian, you may check it out there. And now, for the stuff I watched and read in the last month of the year. Watched Finished rewatching Myriad Colors Phantom World . Ishidate always directed my favorite episodes in this show. But it's also funny that series director Ishihara did the storyboard for the most meta episode. Watched Kimipre episodes 42-45. The Kaito and Kazuma plot actually gets resolved earlier than I expected it would. Watched Princess-Session Orchestra episodes 32-35. The Alicepians being energy beings with physiccal forms that have a different conception of life and death is a somewhat unexpected detail. Watched Genmu Senki Leda . It's a fine stand alone feature that makes as good use of bishoujo, mecha, and love story elements together. Also, Inomata Mutsumi's bishoujo design is truly sophisticated, it feels timeless. Started watchi...

This month was a busy one with the panel and stuff, but that didn't mean I couldn't continue to read and watch things. Watched Finished Miracle Girls . Miracle Girls doesn't really have that many multi-parters, but the finale being a four-parter is pretty standard for a series of this length. The Diamas royal family plot that has been set up a couple of times since the first episode is brought to conclusion. I wonder how much of it has been determined from the start when it's still handled by the first director. Considering one story arc had a guy who wants to lead espers to take over the world, the scope of the finale appear more reserved in comparison. Even if they got caught up in a monarchy's politics, the core drama is ultimately about mending a broken family relationship. Watched Kimipre episodes 39-41. Since this season has an idol theme, I can't help but to think about Nana's dilemma between the invitation to study piano with her mother in Pari...

Monthly Log - October 2025

If you're in the Greater Jakarta area, I'll be having a panel about manga categorization in the upcoming Comic Frontier 21 on Sunday (November 16) afternoon. In the meantime, here are some of the stuff I watched or read in the month of September. Watched Watched Miracle Girls episodes 23-40. After losing the first director for 12 episodes, they got Touch and Yawara 's director to take over by episode 30. The comedy gets noticably more slapstick in some places. But the story also gets into a pretty serious arc when an esper guy approaches the girls for his plot to take over the world with other espers. I like it that they give more screentime for the girls' mom in a couple of episodes, though. Watched Kimipre episodes 34-38. Making an episode that tie up to an IRL event is a pretty neat synergy. The reveal of Jogi's relation to Kaito also makes the direction of their character arcs more clear. Watched Princess-Session Orchestra episodes 25-27. I like tha...

Monthly Log - September 2025

Another season has ended. here are some closing thoughts and some other stuff I watched or read in September. Watched Watched Miracle Girls episodes 6-22. As I keep on watching, the show can feel like it's a collection of pop paranormal topics at times, as the sisters got involved with stuff like snowman (the hairy kind) and unicorn, dreaming of people from ancient times, body swap, bilocation(?), time slip... . ESP can do a lot of stuff, and the episodic character of the show allows for various standalone episodes exploring their own things. Watched Kimipre episodes 30-34. Meroron's relation with the main girls have finally reached a turning point, and the more gets revealed about Meroron, the more I'm getting intrigued what they're planning for the endgame. For now, it's good enough that they can reach this point of resolving the false dichotomy plaguing Meroron's perspective without making Meroron's stubbornness feels frustrating. Watched Prince...

Monthly Log - August 2025

As usual, some of the stuff I watched or read in the month of August. Watched Finished Shinzō Ningen Casshan . The show's highly episodic nature can lead to each individual episode to do interesting things on their own. But it also means there are few major changes in the overarching status quo of the central characters. Perhaps the most notable is just the reveal to the Andro Force and to the public that Casshan is a synthetic man. Otherwise, the relations remain the same until the final two episodes, which are like a two-part finale (both with Nunokawa's enshutsu ). The story is simple enough to easily predict what things will be at stake for the heroes in the finale, but it's still sufficiently exciting to see which stakes they would be able to secure and what sacrifices might still need to be made. Watched April Showers Bring May Flowers episodes 5-9. Whatever combination of character interaction the show presents, they are always delightful to see. Manga grade...
